Inside the FDM 3D Printer

The principle of this technique is to melt and force a thermoplastic (usually in the form of a preformed filament) through a small diameter die and draw a filament across the area of a 2D slice. Once a slice or layer is completed the z-axis increments downwards so that the next layer can be deposited. There is some freedom in materials choice from, PLA and ABS, through to Nylons and Polycarbonates. One drawback of this technique is that resultant structures are not gas or water tight. However, post processing methods can be used to improve surface finish and fill.
